Our High Technology client based in Hedge-end, Southampton is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer on a fixed term contract basis (12 months).

The role is focused on delivering continuous improvement and implementing safe, sustainable changes in the manufacturing practices within the business. Key aspects include process changes, flow and layout design to integrate new technologies and product lines, and ensuring smooth operation across the site. The engineer will focus on improvements aligned with efficiency, cost reductions, quality, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide manufacturing engineering support to the operational team.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, cycle times, cost reductions, and process enhancements using lean techniques and value engineering.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical specifications for equipment.
  • Establish and maintain training processes to enhance workforce competences.
  • Implement metrics to measure the effectiveness of the manufacturing processes.
  • Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining manufacturing system layouts.
  • Recommend and implement engineering solutions to control variation, reduce costs, and enhance process capability.
  • Use data gathering and analysis, structured problem-solving techniques (A3, 8D, DMAIC), and Six Sigma to optimize processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering and NPI operations departments to ensure manufacturability and quality (DFx).
  • Conduct risk assessments for new or altered equipment and processes.
  • Report on project status and budget to the management team.
  • Lead and implement change management projects to meet manufacturing objectives.
  • Take ownership of resolving non-conformities in the manufacturing process.

 Required Experience:

Essential:

  • 3-5 years’ experience + in a manufacturing engineering role with exposure to lean manufacturing and structured problem-solving (A3, 8D, DMAIC, Six Sigma).
  • Data analysis skills related to design and manufacturing capability.
  • Experience in creating standard works, work instructions, and plotting work/process flow.
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety management in manufacturing.
  • Experience with 5S implementation.

 Preferable:

  • Experience in a cleanroom environment.
  • Experience in fine mechanical assembly.
  • Experience with TPM (Total Productive Maintenance).
  • Six Sigma Green Belt.
  • Knowledge of takt time, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), capacity planning, and Gage R&R.
  • SQL query writing skills.
  • Optical fibre handling, including fusion processes (splicing).
