<p>Southampton-based Bowman Power Group was founded in 2004 by Tony Davies, to develop new technology for improving the energy efficiency of reciprocating engines. Bowman's products are complex and require precision engineering so the demands of recruiting for the business are both technical and exacting and it is our understanding of the business that enables us to complete our assignments.</p>

<p>Shortly after, we successfully hired a Principal Mechanical Engineer, a challenging role they had been struggling to fill for some time. Our candidate went on to win the UK Women's Business Award in 2015. We were also approached by Bowman to replace a Principal Electronics Engineer (placed by one of our own team twenty years ago!) who was retiring. Bowman needed a professional engineer with a Power and Electronics background. A headhunter had tried, unsuccessfully, to fill the role. Gerrell &amp; Hard identified a candidate based in the Midlands and who was willing to relocate to the South Coast.</p>

<p>ICS, an independent systems integrator, has been providing advanced robotic welding and automation solutions throughout the UK and Ireland since 1989. The company offers turnkey robotic welding and handling solutions to a broad range of industries including automotive, yellow goods, medical and general manufacturing. The business has a family feel and employees love working for the firm - once in, they rarely leave!</p>

<p>Nonetheless the firm does have one major recruiting challenge that will be familiar to many South Coast-based firms seeking complex technical expertise from new hires: its available talent pool extends to the west, east and north but not to the south. Furthermore, the business needs to hire highly specialist experts with a deep understanding of industries such as automotive manufacturing - whose UK hub is the Midlands.</p>
<p>Gerrell &amp; Hard became a supplier to ICS when our identification of a high-performing candidate led to a mutually rewarding and open conversation between Principal Consultant Dave Watts and the ICS senior team. This laid the foundations for a close professional relationship and our appointment as sole supplier.</p>
<p>The first assignment Gerrell &amp; Hard was invited to work on was for a Service Engineering role which took several months to complete. The team at ICS are well-trained in their field and have a very good idea of what they are looking for. <p>Innovative EV start-up Polestar is renowned for its uncompromising dedication to progressiveness, performance and excellence. Its UK business launched in May 2019 to design and develop future Polestar vehicles, with a team that exemplifies the modern technological workplace, offering complementary niche skills and experience from a broad variety of engineering backgrounds.</p>

<p>Having worked with the G&amp;H team for many years now I have benefited from their experience and commitment to our recruitment process time and time again and this most recent experience with them was no different. Taking on the challenge that the pandemic forced upon us and still managing to deliver 100% attendance with an incredibly high calibre of candidates is no small feat.</p>

<h5 class="mb-4">A strong start</h5>
<p>After running a successful three-day assessment centre for the brand in 2019, Gerrell &amp; Hard was asked by Polestar management to run a similar event in 2020. As a lean, agile manufacturer Polestar seeks candidates with talent, skill and an adaptable approach that is a corrective to the traditional "big OEM" mentality. New starters need to work well together, assimilate into the business quickly and demonstrate potential, flexibility and eagerness to learn, making an assessment centre the perfect hiring tool.</p>
<p>With a planned assessment day already booked in, our candidate identification and shortlisting process began with an advertising campaign, with each CV seen by several Polestar managers. Shortlisted candidates took psychological profiling tests and were asked to make a video about sustainability. The assessment centre was to be the final, definitive test to determine how candidates would work together as a group.</p>
<h5 class="mb-4 mt-5">A rapid pivot</h5>
<p>We had already qualified and sustained the interest of a large pool of candidates when the pandemic required us to radically change our plans. With just over two weeks until the assessment date and candidates already invited, we transformed it to a virtual event while preserving the conditions and methodology required.</p>
<p>We created and sent to candidates an assessment kit consisting of various problem-solving challenges they would need to work with others to solve, since no one candidate would receive every component of the puzzle. Each candidate underwent half a day of remote technical group activities, along with one-to-one interviews and tasks with other engineers. Management of the assessment sessions was complex, involving group activities and breakout rooms for interviews with multiple staff.</p>

<h5 style="margin-bottom: 1rem;">Outcomes</h5>
<p>From a large initial candidate pool, all shortlisted individuals attended the assessment centre, with zero "no-shows"; a credit to the commitment and candidate nurturing from our combined project team throughout the hiring cycle.</p>
<p>Polestar's virtual assessment centre received positive feedback from candidates and led to a large intake of outstanding individuals. The success of the event was in no small part due to Polestar's exceptional commitment: its entire team took a week of their time to be involved &ndash; a superb onboarding experience for a whole generation of new employees.</p>

<h3 class="mb-4">Gerrell &amp; Hard provided an Executive Search methodology, but for recruitment fees and structures, for this renowned and growing brand.</h3>
<p>RML is one of the leading high performance engineering companies in the world. Its background lies in delivering Touring Car, Sports Prototype and Rallying programmes in major motorsport series for global automotive brands winning multiple World Championships for its partners. RML now applies this nimble and winning mind-set to developing high performance road car derivatives and advance automotive technology for OEMs.</p>
<p>As renowned and exciting as RML unquestionably is, it is also a burgeoning brand and is definitely one to watch.</p>

<p class="p1">Although we don&rsquo;t have a PSL, Gerrell &amp; Hard are usually our first port of call, particularly when recruiting at either a senior level or for a specialist role. They stand out from many other recruitment consultants as they have taken the time to understand how we work, and qualify the requirements of the role each time.&nbsp; Consequently, we can guarantee they will present quality candidates to us, who not only meet our technical specification, but will be a cultural fit which is particularly important to us.</p>

<h5 class="mb-4">Candidates become clients</h5>
<p>Gerrell &amp; Hard's work with RML Group came about because an individual who joined the HR team there had been interviewed by us in the past (as a candidate) and liked their professional approach.</p>
<p>In December 2013, after being promoted to HRD at RML, she approached us to help her recruit an operational role. Within six months RML followed up with a further two director-level operational and commercial requirements requiring an Executive Search methodology (but for contingency recruitment fees and structure). The Gerrell &amp; Hard team filled the roles within four months.</p>

<p>Founded in 2019, Volta Trucks is at the forefront of a revolution in freight transport. Founded on the three pillars of safety, sustainability and electrification, Volta Trucks has ripped up the rulebook to design a new kind of vehicle: one far safer and more environmentally friendly than traditional commercial vehicles. The brand is also reimagining the business model for electric truck fleets through its innovative, hassle-free Truck as a Service (TaaS) solution.</p>
<p>&nbsp;When Volta Trucks first approached Gerrell &amp; Hard the company was in its nascent stage: a startup with a concept truck, a small team of founders and fewer than ten employees.
